Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) keeps helping women from low-income families by providing affordable and clean cooking fuel. With the recent Cabinet approval of a ₹300 subsidy per LPG cylinder for the financial year 2025-26, PMUY beneficiaries can get significant relief on their cooking fuel costs. This subsidy aims to keep LPG use steady and protect households from global price changes.
Targeted LPG Subsidy for PMUY Beneficiaries in 2025-26
Union Cabinet has approved a targeted subsidy of ₹300 on each 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for PMUY users. This subsidy applies for up to 9 refills per year during 2025-26, with a proportionate subsidy for 5 kg cylinders. The move is meant to keep cooking fuel affordable and within reach for millions of women across India.
Subsidy Coverage and Financial Allocation
The government has set aside ₹12,000 crore for this subsidy scheme in the current financial year. This funding supports the subsidy on up to 9 refills per beneficiary, helping to lower the financial pressure on low-income households. The subsidy started at ₹200 per cylinder in May 2022 and was later raised to ₹300 in October 2023, showing the government’s commitment to affordable energy access.
Impact of Subsidy on LPG Usage Among PMUY Households
The subsidy has played an important role in increasing LPG use among PMUY beneficiaries. By making refills more affordable, households are encouraged to switch from traditional fuels to cleaner LPG, improving health and convenience.
Growth in Average Per Capita Consumption (PCC)
Data shows a steady rise in average LPG refill frequency among PMUY users. From about 3 refills per year in 2019-20, the average went up to 3.68 refills in 2022-23 and further to around 4.47 refills in 2024-25. This growth shows the positive effect of subsidy support on fuel use habits.
