The project focuses on filling Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs with Godavari water as part of the Musi Riverfront Development Project. The government plans to finish this scheme within two years, aiming for December 2027 to provide daily tap water to households in Hyderabad.
Main Features and Funding of the Godavari Drinking Water Scheme
This scheme will be done in Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), where the state government will cover 40% of the cost, about Rs 2,944 crore, which will be raised through a loan from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO). The remaining 60% will be arranged by the executing agency. The project involves lifting 20 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) of water from the Mallannasagar reservoir in Siddipet district, which is part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.
Effect on Hyderabad’s Urban Population and Water Supply
Out of the 20 tmc water lifted, 2.5 tmc will be used to restore the Musi River, improving the ecological health of the area. The remaining 17.5 tmc will be used to meet Hyderabad’s drinking water needs, making sure the city has a steady and sustainable water supply. ORR Phase-II Drinking Water Supply Project: Increasing Coverage
The Outer Ring Road (ORR) Phase-II Drinking Water Supply Project supports the Godavari scheme by expanding water coverage to municipalities, corporations, and gram panchayats within the ORR and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. This project aims to supply water to about 25 lakh people across 14 mandals.
Reservoir Infrastructure and Areas Covered Under ORR Phase-II
Under this plan, 71 reservoirs have been built at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore. On the foundation stone laying day, 15 of these reservoirs were opened. The areas benefiting from this project include Saroornagar, Maheshwaram, Shamshabad, Hayatnagar, Ibrahimpatnam, Ghatkesar, Keesara, Rajendranagar, Shamirpet, Medchal, Qutbullapur, Ramachandrapuram, Patancheru, and Bollaram. This infrastructure will improve water supply and support urban and nearby communities.
Kokapet Layout Comprehensive Development Project: Supporting Urban Growth
Along with the water supply projects, the Rs 298 crore Kokapet Layout Comprehensive Development Project was started to provide drinking water and sewerage systems for Neopolis and the Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This project is planned to be finished within two years and will support the ongoing water supply efforts, helping the area’s urban growth and infrastructure development.
