Main Features and Benefits of the Scheme
Every year, 15 young scholars are chosen to receive awards of Rs 1 lakh each, paid in parts. Their selected works will be published as books by Muthamizh Arignar publications, giving them valuable exposure. Also, the scheme offers training through the Murasoli daily and Kalaignar Television channel, helping them gain practical journalism skills.
Who Can Apply and How Are Scholars Selected?
Applicants should show a strong interest in journalism and the Dravidian movement. The selection is competitive, with only 15 scholars picked each year based on merit and potential. Interested candidates can apply through official DMK channels, making sure the process is clear and fair.

Chosen students get hands-on training at Murasoli and Kalaignar TV, two well-known media outlets linked to the Dravidian movement. During this time, they receive a stipend to support their learning and living costs, encouraging them to fully focus on their journalistic growth.

Background: Kalaignar’s Legacy in Journalism and the Dravidian Movement
Kalaignar M Karunanidhi was a major figure in Tamil Nadu’s political and journalistic scene. His lifelong dedication to the Dravidian movement showed in his editorial work and media projects, which inspired this scheme.
How Publications and Media Promote Dravidian Ideals
Karunanidhi edited the handwritten journal Manava Nesan and later ran the Murasoli daily newspaper. He also started the Kalaignar TV channel, which still promotes Dravidian ideals. These platforms have played a big role in educating and mobilizing the public, and now they serve as training places for young journalists under this scheme.
Launch Event and Commemorative Activities
The launch event was held at Anna Arivalayam, where Chief Minister MK Stalin revealed the logos for both the Kalaignar Student Journalists Scheme and the Kalaignar Financial Aid Scheme. Eight books were released, including DMK History (1949-1967) compiled by former Chennai mayor C Chittibabu. The event was attended by Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, DMK general secretary Duraimurugan, and well-known Dravidian writer K Thirunavukkarasu.
Earlier, a procession and tribute at Karunanidhi’s memorial on Marina Beach marked the day, showing the party’s commitment to the ideals Kalaignar supported. Stalin’s message on social media encouraged everyone to work towards “Everything for Everyone” and for Tamil Nadu to lead in all areas, inspired by Kalaignar’s vision.
