Maiya Samman Yojana Under Scrutiny: High Court Seeks Crucial Information from Government

  • High Court demands financial transparency regarding the Maiya Samman Yojana.
  • Women aged 18 to 50 receive a monthly stipend of ₹2500.
  • Next court hearing scheduled for February 6.

The Maiya Samman Yojana, aimed at empowering women in Jharkhand, is facing scrutiny as the High Court requests important information from the state government. The court specifically asked for details about the amount disbursed to beneficiaries and the total number of participants receiving funds through this scheme.

Currently, women between the ages of 18 and 50 are eligible to receive a monthly support of ₹2500. Justice Anand Sen raised concerns regarding the allocation of funds, particularly in light of claims that the government lacks sufficient funds to meet other financial obligations.

Case Overview

The case has been brought to light by Ratan Devi, whose late husband, Rajshekhar Tiwari, worked as a librarian in the Chatra district. He has not received due payments from 1999 to 2022, totaling approximately ₹18.68 lakh. The district education officer acknowledged the pending payment but indicated that no funds had been allocated by the government for this purpose.

During the proceedings, Ratan Devi’s lawyer mentioned that despite the government lacking funds for due payments, it continues to fulfill political promises by providing monetary assistance to others. This irony has prompted the court to seek comprehensive details about the expenditures related to the Maiya Samman Yojana and other similar initiatives.

Recognition of the Scheme

On another front, Rabindranath Mahto, Speaker of the Jharkhand Assembly, has praised the Maiya Samman Yojana as a model of social equity for other states in the country. Speaking during a ceremony on Republic Day, he expressed that this initiative reflects the socio-economic ideals of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.

The scheme, according to Mahto, shows a commitment of Chief Minister Hemant Soren to alleviate economic disparity and empower women through financial support.

In his remarks, he linked the dreams of the nation’s founders with the present, stressing the need to fulfill promises of development and equality.
