- New UPI rule starting from 1st August 2025 introduces limits on balance checks and autopayment processing times.
- Recipient names will be shown before every transaction to avoid fraud and mistakes.
- Transaction status updates are now faster, with limited checks during busy hours to keep the system running smoothly.
From 1 August 2025, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is bringing in an important UPI rule change from 1st august 2025 to boost security and improve your experience. These changes include limits on how often you can check your bank balance, updated autopayment rules, quicker transaction status updates, and stricter steps for verifying recipients. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced these updates to keep UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm running smoothly and securely.
Limits on Balance Checks and New Features
With the new rules, you will be able to check your balance up to 50 times in a day per UPI app. This reduces the load on the system, especially during busy times when many transactions happen. Also, during very busy periods, UPI apps might limit or temporarily block balance checks to keep things running well.
To make things easier for you, the available balance will now be shown with every transaction you make, so you don’t need to take extra steps to see it.
How Autopayment Processing is Changing
Autopayment lets you set up automatic regular payments from your bank account. To reduce system congestion during busy times, these autopayments will only be processed during certain off-peak times: before 10am, between 1pm and 5pm, and after 9:30pm. So, if a payment is set for 11am, it might be done a bit earlier or later within these allowed times.
If a payment fails, the system will try again. If it still doesn’t go through, the autopayment will be cancelled to stop multiple deductions or errors from happening.
Checking Linked Bank Details and Limits
You can see all banks linked to your mobile number through your UPI app. But this will be limited to 25 checks per day to keep the system stable. Also, you need to start these checks yourself by choosing a bank in the app before viewing its details. These steps help keep your bank info safe while giving you control.
Faster Transaction Status Updates
Earlier, during peak hours, transactions sometimes stayed pending longer, causing confusion. Now, you will get updates within seconds for payments that aren’t confirmed yet, giving you clear information right away. You can check the payment status up to three times per transaction with at least 90 seconds between each check.

Showing Recipient Name for Every Transaction
To stop fraud or accidental payments, your UPI app will show the recipient’s registered name before you confirm any transaction. This extra step makes sure you’re sending money to the right person. The recipient’s name and the transaction ID will be clearly displayed, giving you more clarity and peace of mind.
What Happens If These New Rules Are Not Followed
NPCI has warned payment service providers that not following these new rules can result in penalties. This might include limits on use of UPI APIs, fines, suspension from adding new customers, or other actions to protect users like you.
Overall, the UPI rule change from 1st August 2025 shows a strong focus on making online payments faster and safer. As a user, these updates will help you have quicker and more secure transactions throughout your day.
